Redskins name Kirk Cousins starting QB for Week 1

This announcement was quickly followed up by a separate report that said the NFL’s independent neurologist had not cleared Griffin and Griffin was not in fact ready to suit up for the game.

ESPN’s Dianna Marie Russini first reported that staff told players this Monday morning that Kirk Cousins would be the starting quarterback. “You have no choice but to get better and to learn from it”. Griffin’s days in Washington are numbered, and it’s more than likely that the ugly preseason game against the Lions will have – fittingly – been his last in a Redskins uniform. Cousins has 18 touchdowns and 19 interceptions in his career, and a poor 77.5 rating. He has yet to turn the ball over. It could explain why Robert Griffin III was so testy and evasive in his press conference yesterday. Cousins and McCoy came in and played cleanup while excelling in the process.

Griffin tweeted Friday night after the announcement that he must sit this weekend. It’s as close to regular-season conditions as a quarterback will get in the preseason.

Tomorrow’s dress rehearsal will be the first time all year that predictions based on performance on a larger sample size will not be speculative. Gruden said he took into account the entire offseason’s worth of practices. Cousins worked with the second team.

Now, he has to quickly adjust. The Redskins will be without wide receiver DeSean Jackson (right shoulder strain) in Baltimore. He led all FCS tight ends with 66 catches as a junior but his draft stock plunged when he tore a knee ligament against Army last November…

So with that knowledge Gruden exposed him behind a weak offensive line in Week 2 of the preseason when left tackle Trent Williams was sitting out, resulting in a concussion.

Although Gruden said after the game that he was undecided on who the Redskins’ starting quarterback would be in Week 1, Cousins said he is preparing to start against the Dolphins. But he was intercepted nine times and fumbled twice. Kirk Cousins will start Week 1.

This is a good matchup for the Ravens to judge where they are at this point of the season.

Following some confusion with Griffin’s playing status-he was initially cleared to play on Saturday, but later “scrutiny…of the neuropsychology data” determined he would not be cleared-Gruden bristled at the idea that Washington is a disaster.
