Is Facebook Testing a New Dialer App?

Details of the alleged app were leaked accidently during a server-side update for the Facebook app. According to its description, the app allows users to see information about who’s calling their phone and will automatically block incoming calls from numbers that are commonly blocked.

No details have emerged about the app, but some are speculating that Facebook will use data from its own network to supply caller info. If this is the case, it’s still unclear as to whether or not Facebook will only display information for your friends or any user who has supplied a phone number to Facebook.

A spokesperson for Facebook did confirm to Venturebeat that Phone exists, but no other details were given. The spokesperson stated that Facebook is “always testing new things,” but that the company has nothing to announce at this time.

If Facebook does launch Phone in the future, it will likely only be available for Android devices. Not surprisingly, Apple is very discerning about allowing apps to replace the iPhone’s core functionalities, like its dialer.
