jack sparrow action figureIt was a tough week for the Pirates of the Caribbean 5 production. Drama on set and an injury have caused minor production delays.

It all started when a man, dressed in pirate regalia with a bird on his shoulder, threatened a security guard on the film’s Gold Coast set. Reportedly, the man was waving a knife around, but no one was injured. The pirate imposter ran into nearby bushland. Police officers and the dog squad are still searching for the man. Police are hoping the CCTV footage of the incident can help them identify the man.

Now, reports are coming in that Johnny Depp, lead star of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, has been injured during production. Depp has apparently injured his hand to the extent that he requires surgery. So far, there have only been sparse and conflicting details on where exactly the injury occurred. According to Variety, Depp wasn’t working when he was injured. The Hollywood Reporter paints a different picture, stating that the actor was on set at the time.

Regardless of where and how it happened, we do know one thing: Depp’s’ injuries will only have a minor impact on production. Johnny Depp will be flying back to the U.S. for the surgery, but the production will continue. The cast and crew will be working on other material for the film in Depp’s absence. Disney isn’t planning to change the release date of the film, which is still two years away.

Johnny Depp reprises his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, but he finds himself facing a new antagonist: Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem). Salazar is an old rival of Sparrow who wants to see every pirate on the sea dead. The only way for Sparrow to survive is to get his hands on the Trident of Poseidon to take control of the seas.
