Video Streaming ipadHBO’s much-anticipated streaming service, “HBO Now,” will launch exclusively with Apple devices in April. In an attempt to revolutionize the way people watch television, HBO’s new streaming service doesn’t require a cable subscription. All viewers need is an Internet connection and an Apple device – at least initially.

HBO’s standalone streaming service will make its debut in April just in time for the launch of the new Game of Thrones season. But for the first three months, HBO will only be offering the service on Apple devices, namely the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. Game of Thrones is HBO’s most-watched series, and Apple is hoping the deal will spike sales of Apple TV and other Apple devices.

With a $14.99/month price tag, viewers will gain access to all of HBO’s original programming (past and present). All of HBO’s movie offerings, including blockbusters, will be included. Customers who subscribe in April through Apple will get their first month for free.

HBO is also in talks with both digital partners and TV providers to offer the service on additional platforms after the three-month exclusive deal with Apple expires.

Viewers have long been awaiting details on HBO’s streaming service, which was first announced in October. The new service creates stiff competition for Amazon and Netflix, but will also put even more pressure on the archaic television business.

HBO’s goal is to reach the 10 million so-called “cord cutters” in the United States. These homes have Internet, but no traditional satellite or cable subscriptions. It’s estimated that half of these homes are subscribed to at least one streaming service, creating a lucrative opportunity for HBO to expand its reach.

Apple’s exclusive deal with HBO will only apply to digital outlets. Those who are subscribed to the channel through traditional cable and satellite providers will still have access to the HBO GO streaming service.
