The win puts Logano into the Eliminator round and takes the pressure off going to Kansas this week and then the wildcard race of the Chase at the 2.67-mile restrictor plate layout at Talladega. “Talladega still looms. It still makes us nervous”, Truex said.

“It was a little slow because of the rain, but we sold a lot of ponchos”, David Hurd, vendor at the speedway, said.

Harvick led 581 laps in the opening round of the Chase and routed the field the previous weekend in Dover, Del., to advance to the second round.

My mistakes and they cost us today. I’m proud of them - I couldn’t be more proud of them. I went around the Speedy Dry where they laid it on the track, and man; I flew into the fence and ran over all kinds of fluid out there closer to the wall than where their Speedy Dry was.

Logano, who made it to the finale last season, doesn’t have to worry about this daunting second round of the Chase. Harvick, Martin Truex Jr. was third, Denny Hamlin fourth and Kurt Busch fifth.

Austin Dillon, who is not racing for the title, was seventh. The Penske Ford driver led 227 of the 334 laps and was generally able to hold a comfortable cushion over his rivals. Earnhardt was 28th, but like Busch wasn’t just mad about contact with another driver, but contact with a wall as they thought there was oil in the upper groove. Kahne fell off the pace and made an unscheduled pit stop on lap 40 after blowing a tire. “We’re real fast up front and we’re real tight in traffic”. We shouldn’t have ever been back there to start with. You injuries and it didn’t hit me, I get the country jacket celebrate again you know typically if you have Victory Lane now we traveled far away from yourself. Kyle Busch would put himself in early trouble for the Round-of-12 by finishing just 20th, never regaining his early race pace after sustaining damage when trying to pump-fake an entry onto pit road at the same time as Kyle Larson.

Larson took complete responsibility, saying he was told to do what the leader did and then got word at the last minute to pit, only Busch was already there and coming back up onto the track.

The victory gives Logano immunity from elimination in the three-race Contender round, making him one of the final eight title-eligible drivers in the Eliminator round.

Originally scheduled to be run on a wet and nasty Saturday night, the race was postponed until Sunday.

“It’s hard to believe, 25 years later or more, that now I come driving into the track and here’s this huge sign with my name on it and the No. 24″, Gordon said.
