A lot of bizarre things have been put on sale on eBay – Britney Spears’ chewing gum, an 18-year old girl’s virginity, a Gulfstream jet – but this one really takes the cake! A woman from Australian state of Victoria is under police investigation after putting her two children, a son and a daughter, up for sale on eBay.
Although the woman in question has pleaded that the posting was a “joke”, and investigators may have accepted her defense in principle, they are treating the case seriously considering the detailed sales pitch that she had included in the advertisement. Her mental health may be evaluated, and if necessary, the children taken into care.
Moreover, the authorities are especially concerned about the number of bids she received. “She said the page was created as a joke, but what worries us is the people bidding on the auction. Who knows who these people are. They could be pedophiles or anyone. It’s extremely disturbing,” a police source said.
The Victorian Department of Health Services is also conducting a separate investigation. “We need to get to the bottom of why she did this,” a department spokesperson said. “This action could attract the attention of the wrong sort of people, whether it was a joke or not, and the family need to understand the risks and receive advice around that.”
While eBay was prompt to take down the advertisement as soon as the police, alerted by a member of the public, had contacted the company, the fact that it was active for more than 12 hours will certainly justify the demand for stricter scrutiny on postings.
