Angelina Jolie Has Ovaries and Fallopian Tubes Removed in Preventative Surgery
Just two years ago, Angelina Jolie made headlines after undergoing a preventative double mastectomy. Now, the 39-year-old actress went under the knife again to have her fallopian tubes and ovaries removed in another preventative surgery. Jolie made the brave decision to go ahead with the surgery after doctors detected possible early signs of cancer.
The actress explained in an op-ed for the New York Times that she carries a gene which gives her a 50% risk of developing ovarian cancer. Jolie lost her mother, aunt and grandmother to ovarian cancer.
In her New York Times piece, Jolie confesses that she had been planning for the surgery for quite some time. She went on to state that it’s less complex than a mastectomy, but the consequences of the surgery are more severe. Jolie will now be forced into menopause.
Jolie went to the same surgeon who treated her mother, who died of ovarian cancer in 2007. She said nothing was concerning in the ultrasound or examination, so if cancer were present, it was in its early stages. Even after the tests came back negative, Jolie made the brave decision to have her fallopian tubes and ovaries removed as a preventative measure.
The actress underwent the surgery last week. She now wears a small patch that providers her with bio-identical estrogen, and a progesterone IUD has also been inserted into her uterus to help her maintain a healthy hormonal balance.
