Male vs. female brain? Not a valid distinction, study says

Scientists who tried very hard to find differences between male and female brains say they can’t do it – not with brain scans and not even by asking seemingly obvious questions such as whether someone likes boxing or worries about his or her mother.

For many years, society has declared the structure of the human brain so different according to gender, we’ve even managed to convince ourselves that the male and female specimens derive from entirely different parts of the solar system.

In other words, the concept that ‘Men are from Mars’ and ‘Women are from Venus’, and little girls are made of ‘sugar and spice, etc.’ and boys of ‘snips and snails, etc.’ is wrong, a new study suggests.

Anywhere between 23 percent and 53 percent of the MRIs had at least one region with a “male-end” score and one region with a “female-end” score, they found. And at the most, 8 percent of the brain scans showed someone whose brain regions all scored “male” or “female”.

Some characteristics are more common in women while some are more common in men, and some are common in both men and women, according to the study.

Professor Joel adds that the idea of male or female behaviors may also be a myth. Science Mag says the group analyzed brain activity for stereotypical behaviors such as scrapbooking and playing video games. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

What we perceive as very different male and female types did not bear out when the scientists studied the anatomy of more than 1,400 brains.

Overall, the results demonstrate that “human brains do not belong to one of two distinct categories” male and female, researchers have concluded.

The researchers compared scans of 1400 people aged between 13 and 85′s brains.

The results were then divided into “most male”, “most female”, a third in the middle or a third considered. Out of this number, only 10 areas showed the most distinction between men and women. “Even if there are differences, does it mean brains come in two different forms?”

Next, the researchers examined the scans to see if there were unique features for each gender. As before, they found that consistently male or consistently female brains were rare, and brains with features related to both genders were common.

The group’s conducted their study at the Sagol Neuroscience Center.

Larry Cahil, a neuroscientist at the University of California, Irvine, who didn’t participate in the new study, said he agreed that brains contain varying mires of male and female anatomical traits. “There are not two types of the brain”.

There’s “a mountain of evidence proving the importance of sex influences at all levels of mammalian brain function”, he said.

FDA names salmon the first genetically modified animal safe to eat

The company says these fast-growing fish take pressure off wild fisheries and have fewer environmental impacts than regular farmed fish. AquaBounty CEO Ronald Stotish called the fish a “game changer” that will provide consumers with access to an affordable and sustainable way to get fish without harming the environment. It’s the first genetically modified animal to be approved for human consumption.

Consumer and environmental groups have spoken out against the FDA’s decision, and some have even said they plan to sue the FDA to block its approval of the salmon. Typical Atlantic salmon produce the growth hormone for only part of the year.

“Consumers deserve to know what type of food they’re buying – and an overwhelming majority has told us that they want genetically modified food labeled in poll after poll”.

Critics have labelled the GM salmon “frankenfish” and warned it could cause human allergies and may lead to the decimation of the natural salmon population if it escapes into the wild.

Meanwhile, the FDA, after conducting an exhaustive and rigorous scientific review, had arrived at the decision that AquAdvantage salmon was safe to eat as any non-genetically engineered (GE) Atlantic salmon, and also as nutritious. Several major chains-such as Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s-have already pledged not to sell genetically modified salmon.

“In the case of the AquAdvantage Salmon, the FDA did not find any such differences”, it said.

The agency would prefer labels saying something like “Not bioengineered” or “This oil is made from soybeans that were not genetically engineered”.

The fish is called AquaAdvantage Salmon and was created to grow faster using AquaBounty Technologies.

The salmon was produced by inserting a growth hormone gene from a Chinook salmon, as well as a gene from the ocean pout, which make the animal grow faster.

The FDA mandates that the fish may be raised only in land-based, contained hatchery tanks in two specific facilities in Canada and Panama.

Both facilities have multiple, redundant physical barriers to keep the fish and eggs from escaping, the agency noted.

In Thursday’s approval announcement, the FDA said the nutritional profile of the genetically modified AquAdvantage Salmon has no biologically relevant differences to the other Atlantic salmon that are farm-raised. The agency said the Canadian government will also be conducting inspections.

Bacteria resistant to colistin discovered

Chinese scientists have reportedly identified a gene that makes Enterobacteriaceae, a family of gram-negative bacteria, resistant to “last-resort” drugs known as polymyxins.

“The polymyxins (colistin and polymyxin B) were the last class of antibiotics in which resistance was incapable of spreading from cell to cell”, he explained. These have become known as “last resort” antibiotics, increasingly used to treat infections that resist every other kind. “Although now confined to China, mcr-1 is likely to emulate other resistance genes… and spread worldwide”. This gene was found on a piece of bacterial DNA that can be transferred between bacteria.

Should bacteria become completely resistant to treatment, it could plunge the world into what the BBC refers to as “the antibiotic apocalypse“, a period in which common infections could be fatal because medicine proves ineffective, and surgeries and cancer treatments requiring antibiotic use would be placed in jeopardy.

“These are extremely worryingly results”, said Liu Jian-Hua, a professor at China’s Southern Agricultural University and co-author of the study. (It’s encouraging that such a project exists.) They say they first perceived a colistin-resistant E. coli in 2013, in a pig from an intensive farm near Shanghai, and then noted increasing colistin resistance over several years.

This prompted the researchers to collect bacteria samples from pigs at slaughterhouses across four provinces and from pork and chicken sold in 30 open markets and 27 supermarkets across Guangzhou between 2011 and 2014. On further examination, the researchers also found mcr-1-containing plasmids in E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from a small number of patients in hospitals in Guangdong and Zhejiang provinces. The MCR-1 gene was also found in E coli collected from 78, or 15 percent of 523 samples of raw meat and 166 or 21 percent of 804 live animals.

Professor Laura Piddock, from the campaign group Antibiotic Action, said the same antibiotics “should not be used in veterinary and human medicine“. So, the development of resistance to colistin may have affected the bacteria discovered by the team in China in other ways – ways that are more harmful to the bacteria than beneficial.

The World Health Organization (WHO) classified Colistin in 2012, as the most broadly used polymyxin and the most important for human health.

The lower infection rate among humans suggests the resistant bacteria passed from animals to people, the study found.

Worse still, MCR-1 enables the bacteria to spread easily from one strain or species to another, according to the study by the researchers which was published in the respected medical journal ‘Lancet Infectious Diseases‘.

Chinese scientists identified bacteria in a position to shrug off the drug – colistin – and livestock.

Scientists have found strains of E.coli and other diseases, which can together cause serious infections and even death.

Experts have described the discovery as “worrying”, particularly as the resistance is found to have spread between a range of bacteria.

China is one of the world’s biggest users of colistin for both livestock and aquaculture, the authors wrote.

First Fallout 4 patch lands this week on PC first

A modder named xxdeathknight77xx on Nexus has found the harpoon gun which was buried in Fallout 4’s list, likely after Bethesda decided that it didn’t fit within their plans. Well, you might want to refrain from doing that unless you want your saved files to be corrupted.

Hines also talked about the fact that Bethesda as a company is not a big fan of console commands. He was asked whether the firm would be bringing console commands to the PS4.

At the moment, we can not really speculate about Fallout 5 as Fallout 4 as only just made its way out. Would you add this to your inventory if it were officially added to the game?

Dedicated waste-landers have used console commands to scour the games data for secrets, to great success. A Fallout 4cheat allows players to instantly level-up their characters to their desired level or the rank where you lost your progress.

Fallout 4 is already full of secrets and things that can be easily missed, but there are a few things in the game that players will never naturally discover. Heck, games before had cheat codes available for consoles and using them didn’t result to the corruption of save files. Furthermore, the company has announced that the fix for these bugs will come first on the PC platform and soon followed by the patch for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions.

Pregnant Woman Hangs Out of Window to Escape Paris Attack

ISIS had been roaming the concert hall’s corridors looking for runaways.

The harrowing footage from outside the Bataclan theater where one of the terrorist attacks took place in Paris at the Eagles of Death Metal show on Friday has an uplifting story within, not to disregard the tragic events that unfurled.

He pregnant-woman-as-she-clung-for-life.html”>told La Province: “I held on for five minutes and then the pregnant woman, who was exhausted, begged me to help her get back inside”. Motionless bodies are seen lying in the doorway below the woman.

The footage was taken by Le Monde journalist Daniel Psenny from his flat window.

“I heard a noise like firecrackers, and at the beginning I was convinced that it was in the film”, he said. “But there was no emergency exit. Sometimes there are evacuations, but there, all the world was running from all sides”.

“The lights came on and I turned to the entrance and saw two or three guys armed with Kalashnikovs”.

“A woman was clinging to the Bataclan window on the second floor”.

“I went from hope to feeling resigned to death”.

“We saw the feet of a gunman who walked past us and we said our goodbyes and as we realised what was about to happen to us, someone opened a door somewhere and we just ran. With another man, I pulled him into the lobby”. Both times when we fell he covered me, making sure that he covered my head and my chest was covered as best as he could. I don’t know, my mind is a blank. Later, he was also injured after being shot in the arm through the window.

She added: “We are not sure at what point David was shot”. He vomited, he was cold, we thought he was going to die.

“We called the fire department, but they couldn’t evacuate us”.

The Parisien, who was ten weeks pregnant, told a friend that she did not reveal the news to her boyfriend because she wanted to wait until three months, it was reported by The Sunday. They put us against the windows and I had to shout to them to stay away.

Psenny was taken to the Georges Pompidou European Hospital in the 15th arrondissement at around 3 am and was waiting for surgery on Saturday morning.

Gmail will soon warn you about risky emails

Soon, you may see a warning in Gmail that tells you that an email has arrived over an unencrypted connection.

Gmail HTTPS encryption is already used by itself as a default for connections between servers and browsers, but for quite a long time the standard for e-mails was to leave them unencrypted. The good news is that email security is getting better. “When you send or receive emails with one of these providers, these messages are as open to snoopers as a postcard in the mail”, said Google in a blog post.

Google, the Univeristy of MI and the University of IL conducted a joint project which studied how email security has evolved since 2013, and it was found that 94 percent of messages sent to Gmail can now be authenticated, making it much hard for intruders, phishers to decode message. The warnings are scheduled to roll out in the next few months and are created to push industry-wide adoption of strong encryption and authentication technologies for email. The researchers compared data from December 2013 and October 2015, and in less than two years they saw significant improvements.

The trio discovered regions of the Internet that actively prevent encryption by tampering with requests to initiate SSL connections.

Moreover, the study also states that the percentage of encrypted emails that Gmail users received from non-Gmail ones, during the same course, has increased from 33% to 61%. The company said it would work with partners through the M3AAWG to strengthen security in this area and stem interception.

“Second, we uncovered malicious DNS servers publishing bogus routing information to email servers looking for Gmail“.

“These nefarious servers are like telephone directories that intentionally list misleading phone numbers for a given name”.

Last year, it came up with the password alert feature that warned users when they or someone tried to log in to their account from untrusted site.

Rise in kids diagnosed with autism

Another still current government survey puts the estimate at one in 68. However, researchers say the increase is probably due to the new methods being used to ask questions. This 1 in 80 rate is good for about 2.24 percent of all children, which is a more than substantial rate. “It’s just more and more kids, its more and more”, said Rosa. Data for this latest study was derived from detailed surveys of 35,000 United States households.

Also, a possibility is that some children receive an early diagnosis of autism that later turns out to be false.

The new survey asks about autism spectrum disorder in a stand-alone question, before asking about other developmental delays.

A new report shows a large increase in the number of children with autism.

“It’s asking about autism specifically, rather than grouping it in with a list of other disabilities”, Walton said. An October study from the Center for Health Statistics found that 13 percent of children who were determined to have autism later had their diagnosis reversed after further testing, reports CNN. This may have been confusing, Zablotsky said.

“That is definitely the take-home message”. Dr. Volkmar is not convinced by the study’s findings, saying in an email “This is a survey”.

The CDC’s key point is that the way physicians define autism spectrum disorder is changing – and therefore so are the numbers of kids who fall under that description. Symptoms often overlap with other disorders such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, cerebral palsy or various learning disorders.

Experts warn the new data is largely the result of a change in the way the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention collects information on autism. The group has long suggested that U.S. officials have been underestimating the commonness of the condition. This is a significant increase from 2014, when 1 in 68 children had been diagnosed. However, one must keep in mind that the health agency made the previous estimates based on data obtained from a different survey called the Autism & Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network.

“To see that big change in prevalence over a four-year period – from 1 in 80, to 1 in 45 – research workers would additionally should be seeing a dramatic change in risk factors for autism in the population”, Fitzgerald said.

“There are so many more professionals who can diagnose autism now”, Alderman added.

She encourages parents to screen children early, because therapy can start early and produce better outcomes.

While the prevalence of reported autism went up, the number of kids with reported developmental disorders went down. “And with more money, you can provide more services”.

Children With Autism May Have Been Undercounted

Iran’s Rouhani cancels visit to Italy and France over Paris attacks

It was expected that Rouhani would meet with the leadership of France and Italy and Pope Francis.

At the invitation of French President Francois Hollande, Rouhani had planned to pay a state visit to the French capital on November 17.

Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian had been due to lead the Iranian team.

President Rouhani’s visit to Italy and France was postponed due to the terrorist incidents in Paris. Zarif said he will travel to Vienna to join talks on Syria’s civil war and confronting Islamic State.

“In the name of the Iranian people, who have themselves been victims of terrorism, I strongly condemn these crimes against humanity and offer my condolences to the grieving French people and government”, Mr Rouhani wrote. A few 40 more people were killed in five other attacks in the Paris region, including an apparent double suicide bombing outside the national stadium, where the French president Hollande and the German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier were watching a friendly soccer worldwide.

Zarif said the Paris assaults demonstrated the danger of extremism wasn’t restricted to the Middle East, or so the fight against it shouldn’t be restricted to the area either.

Mizzou Professor’s Fate Uncertain after Resigning a Courtesy Post.

From there, the video becomes even more disheartening as the student journalist is pushed and shoved by two women who have been identified as school officials: Media Professor Melissa Click, who specifically asked for media coverage on her Facebook page, and Assistant Director of Greek Life Janna Basler.

“Hey folks, students fighting racism on the MU campus want to get their message into the national media”. Protesters were seen on video telling Tai he had no right to take their pictures in the public area. “I need a few muscle over here”, Click shouted to her fellow protesters at Concerned Student 1950, a student and faculty group that says it seeks the “liberation of black collegiate students”.

Police did not release a name but said the suspect was not on or near the university’s Columbia campus when the threat was made. MU’s Association of Communication Graduate Students has recognized her as an “Outstanding Mentor” (2011) and as “Graduate Advisor of the Year” (2013). “We applaud student journalists who were working in a very trying atmosphere to report a very significant story”, it said. “She’s defending her actions, tacitly”.

Melissa Click, a University of Missouri assistant communication professor, tells a cameraman to leave.

Student photographer Tim Tai, on the freelance assignment for ESPN November 9, was attempting to take photos of a tent city erected on the university campus by protesters. Tai said he accepted the apology and has no hard feelings against her. “If you can help, please let me know!” “Tai handled himself professionally and with poise”.

A plaza that had been the site of a sit-in by protesters was entirely empty Tuesday night and only a handful of students were seen walking around campus. It also hinted that her work at the school may be in jeopardy.

“That apology isn’t enough”, Schierbecker said.

The journalists who are invited in to share the stories of those who have struggled should adhere to the basic ethics of the profession that we are expected to uphold every time we tell the stories of others. Her full statement has been included at the bottom of the original post. But, he said, he hasn’t heard back from her since they talked Tuesday.

“I think the whole situation has been, if nothing else, a learning experience for all sides”, he said. “What I saw coming from her seemed to be the worst kind of abuse I saw that day”.

In the professor’s lone public statement about Monday’s confrontation, she apologized for her actions. I have reviewed and reflected upon the video of me that is circulating and have written this statement to offer both apology and context for my actions.

The Department of Communication also issued its own statement Tuesday, condemning intimidation of journalists but declining to comment on Click’s status.

“I regret the actions and strategies I used, and sincerely apologize to the MU campus community, and journalists at large, for my behavior”, she wrote.

Cancer cause: World Health Organization lets red meat off the hook for now

And yes, that includes bacon.

The IARC was carrying out a formal review of meat for the first time and examined a few 800 studies during a meeting of 22 health experts in France earlier this month.

YUKI NOGUCHI, BYLINE: Good morning, Steve.

Meat industry groups protest the classification.

The World Cancer Research Fund has warned for several years that there is “strong evidence” that consuming a lot of red meat can cause bowel cancer.

It gets worse. Bacon is on the list as well. How did the industry respond to all this? The North American Meat Institute called it a “dramatic and alarmist overreach” in an e-mail to reporters. And I think that’s because for all the moderate-sounding language, the World Health Organization did declare processed meats a carcinogen.

Just because meat is in the same category as smoking, it doesn’t mean the risk is the same. You know, they knew this was coming. But it said the risk rises with the amount consumed.

“Cancer is a complex disease that even the best and brightest minds don’t fully understand”, Shalene McNeill, from the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, said in a statement. Individually, most of those studies found that consumption of the food was correlated with cancer. So these are studies that can not be used to determine cause and effect.

The results aren’t that shocking in the USA, where many parents fret over chemicals in cured meats and the American Cancer Society has long cautioned against eating too much steak and deli. “We need red meat for iron, zinc and various vitamins”.

INSKEEP: OK, help me out here.

“For an individual, the risk of developing colorectal cancer due to their consumption of processed meat remains small, but this risk increases with the amount of meat consumed”, says Dr. Kurt Straif, who was involved with WHO’s analysis of over 400 studies worldwide on people who do consume various amounts of pork, beef, lamb, veal and other meats that have been preserved through salting, curing, fermentation, smoking or other processes. But maybe the speculation would be they do something else that would lead to the cancer – a few other behavior?

But the numbers are not high as compared to other more prominent factors. But there are studies that do control for these things. “You could try having fish for your dinner rather than sausages, or choosing to have a bean salad for lunch over a BLT”, Key said via the report by The Guardian.

The most influential evidence came from large prospective cohort studies conducted over the past 20 years. And it suggests there are a few carcinogenic qualities.

“The headlines surrounding this report are alarming, but the findings do not support that eating any and all meat will definitively cause cancer”, said Dana White, a clinical assistant professor of athletic training and sports medicine at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn. “As a registered dietitian, I like to look at the big picture of the overall diet”.
